Modelling canine leishmaniasis spread to non-endemic areas of Europe

Leishmaniasis is a re-emerging One Health issue is Europe. We were commissioned by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) to assess the role of dogs in the spread of Leishmania infantum within the European Union and evaluate potential mitigation measures. We used a combination of quantitative risk assessment and disease spread models to evaluate scenarios of disease introduction in an area previously free of Leishmaniosis infantum in dogs and with competent sandflies, under different mitigation strategies.
